Health Benefits of Lemongrass Essential Oil

Can you ever have too many home remedies on hand when that time of the month hits? Absolutely not. The more remedies in your healing arsenal, the easier you’ll be able to make it through what can be the worst time of the month every twelve months out of the year. So, let’s look at another home remedy that will help you through your period all the while making your house smell amazing.

Lemongrass essential oil is yet another amazing cure-all remedy for whatever might ail you during that time of the month. It is an anti-inflammatory, which is great because inflammation is a large cause of period pain. Thus, it acts as a pain reliever and works well when rubbed onto your skin. Please remember, you cannot rub pure essential oil directly onto your skin. You need to dilute it with something like coconut oil or jojoba oil, and then you are able to put it on your skin. The recipe for this is generally one teaspoon of coconut oil (or another oil that is skin friendly of your choosing) to 12 drops of essential oil (Healthline, 2017).

 It also relieves nausea through either inhalation as an essential oil, or you can use dried lemongrass leaves as part of a tea to help get rid of that pesky nausea (do not use the essential oil in tea, this is ONLY for the leaves directly from the plant itself). On the other side of that, it can also relieve headaches and migraines. It contains a compound very similar to that found in aspirin, and it can help release the hormone serotonin which regulates things like your mood and sleep habits. If you find yourself dealing with a particularly nasty headache, dilute some of the oil as described above and gently rub a small amount onto your temples (Healthline, 2017).

Plus, it can relieve stress and anxiety by lowering your blood pressure. A study conducted with this essential oil in 2015 showed that using this oil as part of a once a week massage drastically reduced high blood pressure in participants (Healthline, 2017).

This essential oil really has some amazing properties! Just remember that you can’t just pour it directly onto your skin – dilute it with the recipe given above. If you’re more interested in just smelling lemongrass’s wonderfulness rather than slathering it onto yourself, use a diffuser, or add just a couple drops to a cotton ball and place it close under your nose (but not touching your nose!) to inhale the scent and trigger its healing powers (Healthline, 2017).
